The Story of Mackmyra

Perhaps it sounds too simple, but it all started with eight friends on a skiing trip in the spring of 1998. Each had taken along a bottle of malt whisky for the host; the topic of conversation was obvious. How do you make whisky? And why isn’t there a Swedish one? The question led them to start exploring the possibilities of making their own Swedish whisky.

Mackmyra was founded after one year’s preparation in March 1999 and started a pilot distillery the same year. For the first year the business was run by the company’s eight founders, with no employees. The first drops of raw whisky were distilled on 18 December 1999. Mackmyra initially produced 170 different recipes and gradually managed to narrow these down to two recipes launched in the spring 2002: Mackmyra Elegant and Mackmyra Smoke. The build on the new distillery also started that year allowing them to grow from a craft distiller to a small producer.

The dream of creating the first Swedish malt whisky came to life. That path was neither the easiest nor the quickest. However, it was the right path, allowing them to produce a Swedish malt whisky with a unique identity.

The new Bruk Distillery is not large, but it has had a great deal of care put into the production. Mackmyra are able to maintain traceability right down to the individual field of barley. It also allows them to continue to look beyond the traditional approach. The small, handmade casks are one example. Another is the Swedish oak that shares its essence so generously. The selected casks are allowed to mature naturally in the quiet recesses of the cool underground warehouse.
