Winery information:

Tradition, innate elegance and the essence of the Renaissance: Tuscany exudes an aura of timelessness that has inspired generations of the Frescobaldi family and is now an integral part of their vineyards. The Nipozzano Estate is located in one of the traditional areas of Chianti: Chianti Rufina, which is the smallest and most elevated Chianti sub-appellation. The 11th century castle is located in the heart of the prestigious Chianti Rufina, which holds the family cellar including wines dating back to 1864. The uniqueness of the Nipozzano terroir continues to produce wines with a wide range of aromas and extraordinary longevity.

Vineyard

The vineyards of Nipozzano are found approximately 20 miles to the east of Florence. Located in the heart of the prestigious Chianti Rufina territory, the vines are grown on a hillside that overlooks the valley and the river Arno. The balance of altitude, soil type and a cool ventilated microclimate provides excellent conditions for perfect growth and produces wines of harmonious character and great longevity.

Vinification:

The winter was warm, followed by a mild spring which encouraged an early budding. 2014 saw a mild summer with intermittent rains, which brought the growing season back to its normal progression. Heat waves at the end of July and the beginning of August resulted in a positive véraison. The diurnal temperature differences promoted a gradual ripening of the fruit and warm weather conditions in September resulted in healthy grapes of excellent quality.

A blend of 90% Sangiovese with 10% complementary grapes: Malvasia Nera, Colorino, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Each variety was fermented separately at controlled temperatures of 30°C, which lasted for 13 days. The grapes were macerated on the skins for 25 days, with frequent pumping over, to extract colour, flavour and fine tannins. The wine went through malolactic fermentation immediately after fermentation was complete.

A proportion of the wine was matured in second and third passage barriques for 24 months. Three months bottle ageing.

Winery information:

CastelGiocondo epitomises the spirit of Montalcino. It is considered to be one of the most historical estates of Montalcino, as it was one of the first producers of Brunello di Montalcino during the 1800s.

The vines are overlooked by the castle and the small medieval town of Montalcino. The combination of the unique location of the vineyard, which is situated at 300 to 400 metres altitude; the south western orientation, which benefits from the hot afternoon sun; and the free draining marl soils; contributes three significant attributes in producing this top quality Sangiovese.

The CastelGiocondo wines are distinguished by their opulence, power and extraordinary longevity.

Vineyard

The vineyards are located on the CastelGiocondo Estate in Montalcino. Campo ai Sassi Rosso di Montalcino displays the same characteristics as Brunello, but in a more youthful, less complicated manner. It is produced from the same grape, Sangiovese, but from vineyards with vines that have very deep roots and yield wines which are aromatic and elegant, and less tannic than the Brunello. These vineyards were first planted in 1990 and then recently replanted, according to the terroir.

Vinification:

The wine was fermented in stainless steel, followed by a maturation on the skins for 16 days. A malolactic fermentation took place immediately after the alcoholic fermentation. A proportion of the wine was matured in 80 hl and 100 hl Slavonian oak casks, while the remaining proportion was aged in French oak barrels for 12 months. The wine then received a further four months bottle-ageing.

Winery information:

Castello Banfi was founded in 1978 by the Mariani family, Italian-Americans who had been involved in wine importing and distribution since 1919. They saw great potential in this then sleepy Tuscan region and from the start their goal was to establish a point of excellence in Montalcino.

Combining a respect for tradition and the environment with state of the art research and working practices they have helped to transform the region’s wines and established Banfi’s reputation in an impressively short period of time. They produce premium wines in Montalcino and beyond with a profound respect for the land and people from which they come.

The Castello Banfi estate is the largest contiguous vineyard in Europe and includes land in Tuscany and Piedmont. Despite its size the estate is not a mono-culture with one third planted to vines, one third to olive groves, fruit trees and other crops and the remaining third woodland.  At the centre of the estate, at 280 metres above sea-level, is the Castello, historically known as Poggio alle Mura, meaning walled hill top, which is now a centre for Banfi wines following extensive restoration by the Mariani family to repair damage sustained during World War Two.

Banfi have vineyards in Tuscany (Montalcino, Bolgheri and Chianti Classico) and Piedmont.

Montalcino is their principal estate and lies at the confluence of the Orcia and Ombrone rivers on the southern slopes of the township facing the Mediterranean. Here conditions are ideal with a variety of soils; structured clay and chalk for the reds and soils with stones and a high proportion of organic matter for their whites. Well-exposed vineyards benefit from plenty of sunshine, breezes and a significant diurnal temperature range.

These factors make the area ideal for grape cultivation including the native Sangiovese and Moscadella varieties with a selection of red and white international varieties.

Banfi Piemonte was created in 1979 when the Mariani family purchased the historic Bruzzone winery and vineyards. It is located on hillsides by the towns of Novi Ligure and Strevi where a variety of noble grapes are planted on calcareous and clay-calcareous soils. The area benefits from ambundant rainfall between the months of October and April. The hot, dry summers are accompanied by sea breezes which mitigate these high temperatures. September is usually warm, with a large diurnal temperature range that allows for gradually maturation of the grapes. Banfi produce white, red and sparkling wines here.

Winemaking at Castello Banfi aims to fulfil the promise of the grapes and retain the character of the land. Traditional methods are combined with state of the art technology and innovation.

The process begins with hand harvesting for the red grapes, followed by hand sorting down to individual berry level to ensure only perfectly healthy fruit finds its way into the finished wines. White grapes are harvested by machine to ensure they can be brought in quickly.

Fermentation takes place in Banfi’s unique hybrid fermenters which combine the hygienic properties of steel with the natural oxygenation and character imparted by wood.

More than 7000 customised barriques and large oak barrels lie in Banfi’s cellars. Following extensive research Banfi barrels are made from French oak from the forests of Allier, Nevers, Fontainebleau and Tronçais. The staves are stacked outside for 3 years in a heptagon formations to allow even weathering before they are transformed into barrels. The toasting of the inside of each barrel is done at lower temperatures and over a longer period to avoid charring and obtain more uniform results.

The wines are bottled without filtration and under nitrogen which reduces the need to add sulphites at bottling and results in purer more expressive wines.

The Chianti Classico area lies between Florence and Siena. Banfi's Chianti Classico estate lies on the hillsides of Castellina in Chianti, at 450 metres above sea-level, to the north of Siena on poor clay loam soils. The area has long summers and bitter winters and in summer, it is not uncommon for a chilly evening to follow the blinding heat of the day. This large diurnal temperature range benefits the growth of the vine allowing it to develop and mature slowly.

Thanks to their liveliness and freshness, these wines are enjoyable to drink when young and suitable for everyday consumption, without compromising the character and high quality standards of Banfi.

This wine comes from dedicated vineyards sloping down from the historic Poggio alle Mura Castle. This was planted in 1992 and was the first vineyard Banfi planted after completing research spanning over a decade into the optimal selection of Sangiovese clones.

Vinification:

A rainy and cold year for which the maniacal selection of the grapes from the vineyard already was fundamental. The operation of defoliation, which allowed the grapes a good ventilation and during the harvest, often made a double passage in the same vineyard .

Even in the cellar the utmost care was taken, the state-of-the-art sorting systems allowed staff to work with only the best grapes, moreover, a very short post-fermentative maceration prevented the extraction of unripe tannins.

The result is an elegant and balanced Brunello, with a good persistence, complex and sweet aromas and with an important but soft structure and a nice final acidity.

The grapes are hand harvested in bunches, followed by hand sorting down to individual berries ,followed by a maceration of 12-13 days.

Alcoholic fermentation took place in temperature - controlled hybrid stainless steel & wood tanks between 27-29°C.

About 70% of the wine was aged for 2 years in French oak barriques - manufactured according to Banfi’s specifications - and the remaining 30% in Slavonian oak casks.

Before release, the wine is bottle-aged for an additional 12 months.

This late harvest is a historic variety of Montalcino. The taste is round, full and extremely perfumed with a hint of acidity that gives balance in the mouth.

Vinification:

The wine is obtained exclusively by the natural drying on the vine, which lasts until mid October and beyond. The raisined grapes are crushed and pressed; the juice is slowly fermented at 15°C for several months until 14-15% alcohol is reached. Part of the wine is aged for 1 year in French oak barriques. An adequate bottle aging period follows.
