Fermentation vessels used were closed top stainless steel tanks.

French oak barriques were used for maturation for a period of 13 months of which 37% were new.

French oak from the Troncais, Allier and Vosges forest are used.

The wine was matured for 19 months in French oak barriques.

Cellaring Potential   10 - 15 years.

The best parcels of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot Bordeaux varietals are selected from the Gimblett Gravels vineyard and blended to make the richly layered and precisely constructed ‘Sophia’. Grapes are meticulously managed, harvested and fermented individually and blended to produce a wine that is a unique canvas of its place.

The soil in the vineyard is of small to medium stones (greywacke)  at an elevation of 30 metres above sea level

The average yield was 45 hl/ha.

Harvested by hand.

Winery information:

Craggy Range has 100 hectares of vineyards in the Gimblett Gravels in Hawkes Bay. The stony soils of this former quarry are located on the same latitude as Madrid, protected from the cooling breeze of the South Pacific to create a warm and dry environment which is the on a par with climate of Bordeaux and Northern Rhône.

The proportions of the blend change most vintages to reflect conditions of the year and to ensure that certain 'house style' is maintained. It is a wine of richness with an abundance of black fruit flavours and a long structured finish complete with dusty tannins.

The vines are managed in balance with their environment in a system of sustainable ecological viticulture. Pruning, removal of excess shoots and foliage, thinning and arranging developing shoots into supporting wires are all done by hand.

Tasting Note:

This full bodied red wine is dark garnet colour. Lifted aromatics of dark berries, cassis, cocoa and wooden spices. Rich sweet fruit and hints of caramel are surrounded by firm fine tannins which provide elegance and great length on the palate.
