Planted in the early 2000’s with a selection of Pinot Noir clones, the exceptional Calvert Vineyard is finely tuned to capture what is called the essence of Central Otago - wild flowers, savoury herbs, black fruits and beautiful silky tannins.
The average age of the vines are 12 years with an average yield of 40 hl/ha.
Harvested by hand.
The vines are managed in balance with their environment biodynamic viticulture. Pruning, removal of excess shoots and foliage, thinning and arranging developing shoots into supporting wires are all done by hand.
Central Otago is New Zealand's highest and the world's most southerly wine region and is now New Zealand's fifth largest wine region. It is also New Zealand's only true semi-continental climate with greater extremes of daily and seasonal temperatures than are found in any of the country's maritime regions. Soil structures vary dramatically from those of other regions with heavy deposits of mica and schists in silt loams.
Central Otago has developed a reputation for producing some of the world’s best Pinot Noirs, rivalling its original Burgundy roots.
Deep crimson red colour. Lifted aromatics of cinnamon, dried herbs, dark rose petal and black cherry. On the palate sweet fruit is well integrated with fine tannin and subtle oak flavours to give a soft but long finish.
